America’s Top High Schools: Beating the Odds 2015: Top High Schools for Low-Income Students

Newsweek Logo

For the second consecutive year, Denison High School has been recognized by Newsweek magazine for being among the top public high schools in the nation that are doing an exceptional job in preparing students from disadvantaged backgrounds for college. DHS was ranked No. 298 among the 500 high schools in the “Beating the Odds” list. The list ranks schools on graduation rate, college enrollment rate, SAT and ACT scores and participation, advanced placement and international baccalaureate scores, full-time counselor to students ratio, dropout rate, enrollment in college courses during high school, state test scores and the effects of social inequality on education by factoring in student poverty as reflected by eligibility for free or reduced price lunches.
The Newsweek study listed the following rankings for DHS.

College readiness: 80 percent
Graduation rate: 98.1 percent
College bound: 85.8 percent
Poverty: 59.4 percent
The following data was also listed for DHS: counselor to student ratio, 1:357; student retention, 88.3 percent; SAT/ACT composite score, 36.0; average ACT score, 19.8; AP/IB dual enrollment composite, 67.5; and dual enrollment participation, 19.6 percent.
The 2015 high school rankings were created in partnership with Westat, a company that conducts non-partisan studies. More information can be found at
